GUWAHATI: Construction work on the memorial for the martyrs of the historic Assam agitation will commence from December 10. The people's stir during this six-year-long Assam agitation (1979-1985) was against the influx of Bangladeshis into the State. It was on this day in 1979 that KhargeswarTalukdar became the first martyr of this masses' movement, at Bhabanipur — presently in Barpeta district. December 10 is observed as 'Swahid Divas' (Martyrs' Day).

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will formally launch the construction work. On the occasion, the CM will also inaugurate the 'Axam Andolanar Tathyakosh' (a database along with photographs of the movement). This first volume will comprise more than 800 pages.

The decision to set up this memorial along with a park was taken up by the present government. Prior to this, there was no official memorial for the martyrs of this movement. This memorial will showcase the historic agitation by the Assamese people.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs 47 crore. It will be set up at around 100 bighas of land in PaschimBoragaon within the city. After the tendering process, the work order has been also issued. The project will be implemented by the 'LokNirmanBibhag' (erstwhile PWD) on behalf of the 'Implementation of Assam Accord Department'.
