GUWAHATI: With people from all over Assam standing against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), over hundred of writers and artistes of the State also took to the streets opposing the Bill in their own ways on Sunday. The protesters opposed the Bill through songs and art pieces.

Eminent intellectuals, litterateurs and artistes from different parts of the State came in to oppose the Bill and expressed their resentment at the protest programme organized at Guwahati Club Rotary on Sunday. The writers and artistes society stated that they would take awareness drives to make people aware of the possible negative effects of the Bill.

Speaking against the Bill katha shilpi Apurba Kumar Sarma said, “Some are labeling our protest as language-centric. Hence they should know that it’s not a language-centric agitation, but an existence-centric one. There’s no question that the Assamese people will not survive if the Bill gets its passage.”

Noted litterateur Hiren Gohain said that the Bill would never be accepted. He added, “The government is violating our independence. India will never accept subordination of one community over another, as no community is subordinate of another community.”

Biren Singha, Jnanendra Barkakati, Sameer Tanti, Anuradha Sarma Pujari, Udayaditya Bharali and many others delivered their speech against the Bill. Others extending support against the Bill include Phanindra Dev Choudhury, Jayanta Madhab Bora, Nituparna Rajbongshi, Sushanta Talukdar, Naren Patgiri, Rashmirekha Bora, Ratna Talukdar and many others.
