GUWAHATI, Jan 29: They say marriages are made in heaven but large-hearted people are the ones who make smiles etched on the faces such couples.

As many as 90 poor couples tie the knot at a mass marriage ceremony organized by Palasbari MLA Prab Kalita, in association with Kalyan Ashram, an Ngo, at Mirza today. The entire ceremony was conducted in accordance with Hindu Vedic marriage system. While twenty-five of the 90 couples are from gaon, 56 are from from Kamrup and nine are from Goalpara districts. Bare minimum necessities of newly-married couples like utensils, laps, mosquito curtains and other clothes were given to the newly-married couples. The ceremonial handing over of brides whose family members failed to turn up was conducted by some renowned persolities of Palasbari. Noted singer Krishmoni Chutia was one to perform the ceremonial handing over of a bride to the groom at the mass marriage today. As the tradition goes, all those present at the mass marriage ceremony were given a feast by the organizers.

A meeting was held after the mass marriage ceremony. Speaking at the meeting, MLA Kalita said: “Marriages, as often as not, are burdens for many poor families. They often sell their landed property or give them in hock to conduct marriages of their wards. There’re also cases of such parents committing suicide, not being able to get back their landed or other property. Talking all such plights of the poor into consideration we’ve taken such a step. Every person weaves a dream of his/her marriage, and crestfallen are the ones whose dreams don’t come true.”

The MLA further said: “We’ll opt for inter-religion marriage next year if such couples come forward.”
