AIUDF-Dispur on same wavelength

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 29: The AIUDF and the BJP-led government at Dispur were on the same wavelength on Friday when the Opposition party backed the latter up on the issue of allowing only qualified people to get eligibility for fighting panchayat polls in the State so as to cut corruption in the Panchayati Raj system. Going a step farther, the opposition party said that there should be fast-track courts in Assam for disposing of corruption cases at the panchayat level. In a statement issued to the press on Friday, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said: “The Centre has fast-track courts to dispose of corruption cases against people’s representatives. Similar courts should also be set up in Assam so as to deal with corruption cases of panchayat leaders.” On the issue of qualified candidates for panchayat polls in the State, Ajmal said: “It would have been better if such a move is also taken in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.”
