ASI arrested for firing on excavator driver

GUWAHATI, Dec 8: Basistha police station ASI Golap Konwar, who was arrested by Dispur police for allegedly opening fire on the driver and the handyman of an excavator on VIP road near Sixmile area of the city last night, was today sent to three-day police custody.

Konwar was today produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM)’s court after he was arrested from Sampriti Path residence in Sachal area of the city.

Police sources said ASI Konowar, who was on the way to his home by his Alto (AS-01-AZ-2252) last night, opened fire on the driver and handyman of the excavator (AS-O1-GC-5098) on VIP road at Sachal area of the city for allegedly not allowing him to overtake his vehicle.

Sources said the ASI was irked with the driver of the excavator for not allowing him to overtake and subsequently opened fire on them.

 The excavator, owned by one Abhiit Kumar of Patarkuchi, was on the way to Borbari from Six Mile.

The driver of the excavator, Rupesh Thakur and handyman Rakesh Kumar were injured in the firing. Both Rupesh and Rakesh have received serious bullet injuries on hands and they have been admitted to hospital.  Dispur Police raided the house of Konowar and one 9 mm pistol with 23 rounds of ammunition were recovered from his residence. Of the seized ammunition, 20 rounds are of 9 mm pistol, two rounds are of AK-47and one round is of .32 pistol.
