Assamese beauty pageant faces racial slur

GUWAHATI, Sept 19: Racial slurs are still in store for Indians elsewhere in the world, and the latest in the news for having faced such a slur is an Assamese lady who vied for a slot in the Mrs Universe 2017.

Kristi Das, winner of Mrs Universe 2017 E-vote among 88 contestants from all over the world, is the first Assamese lady to have made it to the top 20 in the world file of the event in South Africa. In file round Kristi had to face racial discrimition from a co-contestant, Lati, the USA. When Kristi asked Lati if she (Kristi) could use the mirror, the American responded to it roughly, and said, “No, you cannot… bloody Indian, are you blind? Get lost from here… ridiculous woman. This is our area. Get your dirty face out of here…” After lodging a written complaint with the Mrs Universe organizers the US contestant was disqualified from the contest.  Kristi, who ended the contest with a berth in the top 20, said: “I got much help from Mrs Universe organizers. I feel bad as to why people in some of the countries still discrimite Indians? Thanks to Mrs Universe for being responsive to the cause of the contestants. I’ve faced such a situation and got help from the authorities there. Someone in the future may not get such response. I appeal to the Mrs Universe organizers to keep vigil on such issues.”
