Cancel TAC polls in Dimoria by June 14 or face economic blockade: Amri-Karbis

From our Correspondent

SOPUR, June 8: A number of Amri-Karbi organizations today had some straight talk and demanded of Dispur to let them know if the government would be able to come up with a positive response on cancelling the move to hold Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) elections in the six TAC constituencies located in the Dimoria area by June 14, failing which, they would resort to go for an economic blockade at Jorabat on June 15.

Hundreds of activists of six Amri-Karbi organizations today staged a dhar in front of the Sopur Revenue Circle Office, demanding cancellation of the move to hold TAC elections in six TAC constituencies located in the Dimoria area. The TAC constituencies in the Dimoria area are Dimoria, Khetri, Sopur, Phongrai, Digaru and Ampri.

Amri-Karbi Students’ Union (AKSU) general secretary Sanjay Terong said: “We won’t allow any TAC elections in the Dimoria area where there is only three per cent Tiwas. Since 2010, we have been thwarting the Government’s move to hold TAC elections in the Dimoria area. Now Dispur is making a fresh bid to hold TAC elections in the Dimoria area. Even if TAC elections are held in the Dimoria area, there won’t be any development of tribals. However, there will be development to members to be elected. The tribals in the Dimoria have been losing their property like lands and other assets very fast.”

Terong said: “We have set Dispur a deadline of June 14 by which it should let us know that it has cancelled the move to hold TAC elections in the Dimoria area. If Dispur fails, we will resort to an economic blockade at Jorabat on June 15. If any untoward incidents occur during the blockade, the government will be held responsible.”
