CPI-M opposes Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 7: The State Committee of the CPI(M) has opposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 that, it said, will render the indigenous people of the state into a minority.

“We will not tolerate the conspiracy of the BJP government to accord Indian citizenship to foreigners based on their religion. Such a step will render the local people of the State into a minority. If this Bill becomes an Act, no correct NRC can be prepared in the State. We also condemn the act of the ruling government of delaying grant of ST status to six ethnic tribes of Assam,” CPI (M) Assam secretary Drupad Borgohain said, while addressing newsmen at Chandmari.

“We have decided to stage protest against the Bill from November 9 to 16,” Buragohain added. CPI(M) Assam assistant secretary Munin Mahanta was also present at the press meet.
