Dispur's negligence to official language Act worries AXX

GUWAHATI, August 21: The Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) is worried over the State Government not taking any steps to implement the Official Language Act in all offices in the State.

In a statement issued to the press today, AXX president Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bora, in-charge vice president Dr. Parag Kumar Thakur and secretary general Paramanda Rajbongshi said: “Despite AXX repeatedly requesting the Sarbanda Sonowal-led Government at Dispur for the implementation of the Assam Official Language Act, the State Government is yet to take any tangible step towards that end. Such negligence towards the Assamese language will pose a serious threat to the Assamese language.”

A delegation of the AXX recently met the Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, the Fince Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other ministers and MLAs on the practical implementation of Assamese as the official language in all offices in the State. “However, not taking any steps for practical implementation of Assamese as official language in the recently announced Annual Budget has worried us,” the release said, and added: “Instead on leaving the responsibility of protecting the Assamese language from cannibal languages like English and Hindi, Dispur should fully implement the State Official Language Act. In order to make that really happen, if the government asks the AXX it is ready to make available an administrative terminology cell, a running dictiory and necessary books within three months.”

The Xahitya Xabha further demanded of the government to develop all necessary infrastructure in the Assam Secretariat and in the offices of deputy commissioners and sub-divisiol officers, besides installation of Assamese software in 1,000 computer sets, appointment of Assamese DTP operators, etc.
