Dwelling houses for making Guwahati a slum-free city

Guwahati, March 18: The government has identified 164 slum areas in the city to implement a housing scheme under the Rajiv Awas Yuja that seeks to make Guwahati a slum-free city.

The issue was taken up at meeting chaired by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at his official residence.

The meeting dwelt on ways to speed up the implementation of Rajiv Awas Yoja under Guwahati Municipal Corporation. In the course of the meeting, Chief Minister Gogoi asked the officials concerned to take steps on a fast-track basis for building the dwelling houses and 164 slum areas have been identified in the city which would be encompassed under the scheme initially.

Gogoi further asked the officials to make temporary dwelling arrangements for the beneficiaries during the construction period to make it a hassle-free exercise.

Around 18,500 households would be accommodated in the city under the scheme initially which would be replicated subsequently.

Similar project is also on the pipe line in Dhubri, Kokrajhar and Dibrugarh which would, the government claims, would see its completion in a time-bound manner.

Principal Secretary for Urban Development and Guwahati Development, Paban Kumar Borthakur, Commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Viswathan S, and a host of other top officials were present at the meeting.
