GUWAHATI, June 29: Distinguished educationist Tilottama Barooah passed away in the wee hours on Thursday morning at her Silpukhuri residence in the city due to massive cardiac arrest. She was 79 and has left behind a host of relatives. Born on 21 March, 1938 in Shillong, Tilottama Barooah took her MA degree in Education from Gauhati University, followed by another MA degree in Social Science from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Bombay. Beginning her career as a teacher in Shillong, she held several government positions, including Inspector of Schools of undivided Kamrup district, Secretary of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Director of Adult and Non-Formal Education and Additiol Director of Elementary Education, retiring in 1996 as Director of Secondary Education, Assam. She also served in various other capacities, notably as Educatiol Consultant for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in NE region, Member of Assam branch of Indian Red Cross Society, Member of Guwahati Magement Association and Member of Rotary Club of South Guwahati. Recipient of several awards and honours, she represented her country with distinction in several educatiol programmes abroad. Her last rites were performed at bagraha crematorium in the city on Thursday morning in the presence of a host of near and dear ones, friends and admirers.
