Existing STs to oppose move to accord ST status to six groups

GUWAHATI, Dec 29: The Coordition Committee of Tribal Organizations of Assam (CCTOA) comprising as many as 19 tribal bodies of the State today adopted four resolutions against the Centre’s move to accord ST status to six ethnic groups of Assam, at a meeting at ITA Cultural Centre for Performing Art at Muchkhowa in the city today.   The resolutions are – opposing any move to accord ST status to the six ethnic groups in Assam, asking the Central Government not to distort the very criteria of the six ethnic groups based on which they are treated as OBC or MOBC now, taking the legal course up to the Supreme Court on India if the Centre goes ahead with its move to accord ST status to the six ethnic communities and bringing about awareness on the would be situation of the existing STs in Assam and other States in the Northeast after according ST status to the six ethnic communities. The leaders of the 19 organizations said that that the Centre was contemplating on according ST status to as many as 1,000 tribes, including the six groups from Assam, in the country, and that would affect the prospects of the existing STs in Assam badly.
