GUWAHATI, April 23: Some ‘sprinkling dumpers’ are at work in Guwahati! These are dumpers being used for carrying garbage. On their way to the garbage pit at Boragaon in the city, they do sprinkle other vehicles with garbage.

Usually compactors are used for collecting garbage from GMC garbage heaps scattered all over the metropolitan city. However, the number of such compactors is very small in Guwahati. And as such, some dumpers are used to carry garbage from different locations in Guwahati to the dumping ground at Boragaon near Deepor Beel. The crux of the problem is that the dumpers being used to carry garbage have many a negative sides. They bear no number plates, nor do they have any backlights. The loaded garbage in such dumpers is left uncovered on the top as the carriers have no provision for covering their loads.

What happens in the whole casual approach to garbage disposal in the metropolitan city, touted as the gateway to South-East Asian nations, is nauseating! The dumpers keep sprinkling garbage in their sides and backs, besides spillage. Such dumpers are driven at a very fast speed. As often as not, they leave behind trails of spillage of mucky garbage materials all throughout in their routes from the point of garbage collection to the dumping ground at Boragaon. This is just one of the numerous negative sides that make Guwahati repel visitors, including investors.

On an average, Guwahati produces eight-ten metric tonnes (MT) of garbage everyday. The quantity of garbage produced in the city is elephantine, so is the problem of its disposal.
