Gorkha leaders meet RGI over NRC update

GUWAHATI, July 21: A nine-member delegation comprising Advocate B Chetri, and Advocate NN Upadadhyay representing Akhil Asom Gorkha Sammelan, Bharatiya Gorkha Parishangha, Assam State Branch and Asom Nepali Sahitya Sabha today met the Additiol Registrar General of India, SK Chakrabo and held talks on the issue of non recording Gorkha/ Nepali citizen as origil inhabitants in the remarks column of VTR form of the NRC update process in the State. The delegation also met Registrar General of India (RGI) Sailesh. They submitted a memorandum in this regard. The memorandum highlighted the census record of 1972, State Government notifications of 1947 and 175 according the status of protected class and OBC respectively to the Nepalese (Gorkhas). The RGI gave a patient hearing and assured the delegation to look into the matter. This was stated in a press release issued here today.
