Is garbage hallmark of Guwahati metro city?

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 2: There is no reason to wonder if a child identifies ‘garbage’ as the hallmark of Guwahati when he/she is asked. This is a tale that sees no end, at least in Guwahati. Children see garbage everywhere in the city, so do adults.

Take KR Choudhury Road at Bharalumukh as a case study. As seen in the picture, there is a dustbin. The bin remains filled and sometime empty, when the GMC evacuates it. However, a long stretch on the road remains littered with garbage, without ever being evacuated.

The scene makes one sure that the GMC is not performing its duty to evacuate garbage properly. At the same time, it also proves that people are not conscious about garbage heaping. As often as not, garbage is seen lying on the ground  of the road even when the dustbin is empty. This proves that people have the habit of heaping garbage at places other than dustbins also. They just want to get rid of garbage just by removing them from their households.

A city where Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was very popular should not have looked like this. Such scenes do questions on the success of the cleanliness drive in the city.
