GUWAHATI, Nov 17: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has termed the RGI’s plea to the Supreme Court of India to extend the deadline for publication of draft NRC to July 31, 2018 a conspiracy.

In a statement issued to the press on Friday, the premier students’ union of the State said that under no circumstances it was going to accept any deferment of the deadline for publication of draft NRC.

AASU president Dipanko Kumar th and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that both the Centre and Dispur had decided December 31, 2017 as the date for publication of draft NRC, and the Supreme Court approved that. “By seeking seven months more, the RGI has expressed its lack of confidence on the work of the Centre and Dispur. It’s a conspiracy to get the Citizenship Amendment Bill passed before NRC update. We and 28 other local bodies did give some suggestions to the Government for a correct NRC. NRC works have to suffer as the government ignored our suggestions,” the release said.
