Jourlist, playwright Dipak Mahanta no more

GUWAHATI/JAGIROAD, Dec 3: Dipak Mahanta, who received the feet of excellence in the field of jourlism and stage play simultaneously, lost his life in a tragic road mishap on late Wednesday night. Mahanta who was working as a senior producer in Assam Talks, a private satellite news channel was on his way to Guwahati after shooting for a programme, when the official vehicle he was travelling in met with an accident in Jagiroad.

His body was taken to his residence in Tezpur from Guwahati later in the day.

Born on November 14, 1961, Mahanta played a lead role in revival of stage play in Tezpur. He brought laurels to the State by staging some of his acclaimed plays in Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of India. He was also associated with various cultural organizations of Tezpur and Guwahati. He is survived by his wife and their only son who is studying in Scotland.

The Electronic Media Federation of Assam, Guwahati Press Club, Jourlist Association of Assam, Jourlist Association of Assam, Morigaon unit, Assam Press Correspondents’ Union have condoled his demise and termed it as a great loss to the jourlist fraternity. Cutting across political lines various political parties too condoled the untimely demise of Mahanta. In a statement, AGP president Atul Bora said that with Mahanta’s demise Assam not only lost a jourlist, but also lost a great actor and a playwright. Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Union Minister and State BJP president Sarbanda Sonowal and the BJP Yuva Morcha too condoled the Mahanta’s demise.
