Killer weed set to kill generations!

GUWAHATI, June 15: The mece of killer weed (very potent marijua) and monster weed (very powerful marijua) in Guwahati is far from being over. Weed-heads in the city include children and students of early teens!

Thirteen-year-old gesh was smoking marijua sitting under a tree at Garbhanga forest reserve, near Basistha Ashram in the city. He had been under the influence of the ganja since morning and was waiting for his friends to join him.

“I haven’t gone to school today. I study at Gopal Boro Government HS School. I felt lazy to wake up and decided a day out with my friends,” he said.

gesh is one of the numerous children in the city who have been under the influence of substance abuse, especially marijua. The fact is clear that marijua is easily available, defying age bar. Basistha Ashram has been a safe haven for young addicts to puff. Desperate efforts have been made by the police and NGOs to make the Ashram tobacco free, all went in vain. Though Basistha Ashram police have banned the sale of marijua in and around the Ashram, marijua sellers come up with innovative ways. They empty cigarettes of tobacco and refill them with marijua. A marijua cigarette costs Rs. 10 apiece.

Meanwhile, gesh’s friends joined him at Garbhanga forest reserve. Three of them are his classmates. All of them bunked classes for the day.

“I have bought 3 purias today at Rs. 20 each. It would not last for the day. We’ve to bring more. It is easily available. They give to anybody who wants. We’ve learnt smoking marijua from adults. I don’t feel like going to school. I stay most of the time with my friends here,” 11-year-old Haren said. “Other drugs are costly and one needs to have contacts to get them. We run for hideouts whenever we see police in the vicinity. However, they seize marijua from our possession if we get caught and let us go,” Rupesh said.

There are numerous places in Basistha, Beltola and Khapara areas where marijua is easily available. Young under 15 years of age could be seen thronging those places from morning to night. A few local bars in Khapara area also sell marijua.

“We keep on seizing trucks loaded with marijua. We have even raided places where marijua is sold and seize in large quantities. However, loopholes are not traceable in the system. Earlier, marijua could be found in the pan shops at Basistha Chariali. After police interfered, the business stopped for a while. Still there is mushrooming of a few shops at the Chariali,” an officer in-charge of a police station said.
