Kingpin of 15 Mile clash arrested

DIMORIA, July 17: The Sopur police today arrested Jamiruddin Ahmed in connection with the July 6 incident at 15 Mile in the Jorabat area. There was a conflict between two communities in the area following the beating up of a youth, Gyan Rongpi, by Jamiruddin and another youth. The two youths have since been absconding.

The situation escalated further when some miscreants set afire the 15 Mile Market when the local people were busy in a meeting to settle the dispute. Ten shops were charred in the fire.

In order to prevent of any such incidents from reoccurring in the area in the future, a peace meeting was held with Revenue Circle Officer Munindra th in the chair. ACP Hari Chandra Sarma was also present at the meeting. The meeting formed a 12-member peace committee with Luster Changa as president and Sopur police station officer in-charge Ratneswar Das as general secretary.   

Meanwhile, a team of officials from Sopur Revenue Circle led by Revenue Circle Officer Munindra th yesterday evicted hundreds of shops and houses erected illegally on the land of the tiol Highway Authority of India (NHAI) between 14 Mile and Byrnihat.

The move, according to the Circle Officer, was taken to get rid of frequent violence and clashes that take place in the area where hundreds of illegal shops and houses have sprung up. Encroachment upon NHAI land has been rampant there, the Circle Officer said.
