Miscreant overpowers octogerian, loots her belongings

GUWAHATI, April 17: Miscreants kept an 80-year-old woman, Ranja Sarma, tied and looted belongings from her house in front of her under the very nose of Geetagar police station in the city last night.   

The woman stays on the fourth floor of Rodalee Apartment at Hatigarh Chariali. When she was sitting in her varadah around 10 pm, she saw a man coming up by the stairs. The man soon gagged her mouth, tied her with a rope, took the keys from her and looted all valuables. The woman sustained injuries in one of her hands, the face and fell unconscious. The incident was not known to anybody in the house. When the woman regained her senses around 3 am, she rang the calling bell that is connected to her younger son staying on the fifth floor of the apartment. Soon her son rushed to her mother and informed the police of the incident.

Along with the police, sleuths from the Crime Branch and forensic experts visited the rooms. The police said that around Rs 50,000 cash, an ATM, a passport, and some US dollars were looted by the miscreant.

In another incident, photo jourlist Chinmoy Roy’s house at Milanpur in the Chandmari area in the city was also looted last night. Cash and gold jewelries were looted by the thieves. Back home around 2 am, Roy saw the door of his room open. When he made an attempt to inform others in the area, he saw two youths. While one of the two fled the scene immediately, he caught hold of the other who too maged to flee inflicting him injuries.
