Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

GUWAHATI, March 5: The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is still to reach certain spots in the city. The stink that wafts out from such spots keeps those associated with the cleanliness drive and the public as well reminding that the drive is far from being successful. The stink clearly says that they need to sweat buckets.

Some of such stinking spots in the city are a stretch of the road between RBI and Lakhtokia in the Panbazar area, the area near the Irrigation office at Chandmari, Sukreswarghat and other parghats of the Brahmaputra, Fancy Bazar etc.  Heaps of garbage are still seen lying in such places. The river ghats are littered with leftover food, wastes and other garbage.

The people residing in such areas are a worried lot. They know not if the administration will at all take the pain to clean their areas or not. They are the ones who never take without a pinch of salt all that the administration claims to have done in the me of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. They want that the administration pay attention to the cleanliness of their areas as well.

Admitting that garbage is still seen in certain areas in the city, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Saharia said: “It’s true that garbage is still seen in some busy areas in the city. We’re on the job to clean them all. We’ve cleaned the front side of Sukreswar Temple. The onus of keeping the riverside of the temple clean lies with the Temple Committee. Even then, we’ve taken a decision to clean the river ghats in the city once a week. This will start soon.”
