One-ba problem, Dispur still to solve it!

Bhangagarh-Ulubari Majhar Path

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 31: A one-ba problem that could have been solved with little effort has been troubling devotees bound for Ulubari Majhar in Guwahati and others over the years.

The Bhangagarh-Ulubari Majhar Path is a busy path in the city. The Majhar is visited by devotees, including Hindus, besides others. The people of the locality have to use the path every now and then. For them the path is more important than what a highway is for others. However, the condition of the path is pathetic. The drains on either of its sides are neither deep nor wide. The path is dappled with craters, all throughout. When it rains, the path is inundated. The local people have to tolerate the gging water-logging for days together when it rains. Even when it does not rain, the residents in the locality do not get any respite. The numerous craters on the road hold water for days together, making the road mucky. The area becomes a hellhole during the monsoon.

The local people say that theirs is a one-ba problem. The administration can solve it without much effort. They just want the administration construct the path along with the drains running along either of its side. The stretch of the road is not that long and as such the cost of construction of the road does not seem to be that high. However, the path continues to elude the attention of the successive governments at Dispur.

Another problem that adds to the woes of the people of the locality is lack of streetlights on the path. Taking the advantage of the lack of streetlights, some miscreants, especially chain stchers, have made the path dangerous for women to tread on when it is dark. Devotees going to the majhar, including women, and the local people are a scared lot. They, especially women, dare not tread the road when it is dark.

With the successive governments at Dispur showing scant regards to the woes and plight of the people in the area, they are now keeping their hope against hope that the new dispensation at Dispur will do something tangible to rescue them from plight they have been in over the past few years. The moot question now is: will the BJP-led coalition at Dispur live up to the expectation of the local people? It is something to keep tabs on!
