Postal Departments keeping pace with banking sector

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 18: With the use of advanced technology in the banking and other institutions in the fincial sector, it was a serious challenge for the Postal Department to stay afloat in the market. However, the department has risen to the occasion and brought about  paradigm shift in its work so as to keep pace with the ever-changing banking sector. The department has already taken many new systems like core banking solution (CBS), core system integrator (CSI), online service, ATM system, etc., to stay afloat in the market. All these services are being brought to Assam as well.

On this issue, Assistant Superintendent of Post Offices Giri Kanta Deka told The Sentinel: “The Department has implemented in Assam almost all the services it has under its disposal elsewhere in the country. Some of the pilot projects for change in the service systems were completed with success in Assam. We’ve started the CBS, CST, postal ATM etc., in the State. In Assam circle, there are 19 head offices, including Guwahati GPO. So far, 427 of the 626 post offices have CBS implemented, and the process is underway in 198 others. In  Guwahati, CBS system has been complete in as many as 53 post offices. The system will soon be implemented in the post offices near the Assam Tribute and the Assam Secretariat. In twenty-eight other post offices in the city, the system is still to be implemented. This apart, the Department started a pilot project to make Postal Life Insurance (PLI) online in 2014, and now the project has been successful in the entire State. Likewise, the CSI pilot project has been successful in Tinsukia division. This part, we have decided to introduce the postal ATM in as many as 25 locations, and in five locations – Guwahati GPO, Jorhat, Tezpur, Dibrugarh and Silchar head  offices – the system is functioning well. This facility will soon be made available at the post offices at Gauhati University and Rangiya.”
