GUWAHATI, May 21: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today observed the 25th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at the State party headquarters, Rajiv Bhavan, today. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi offered shradhanjali to the former prime minister in the presence of a host of Congress leaders.

A condolence meeting was later held in Rajiv Bhavan under the president ship of Ripun Bora, MP and vice-president of the APCC. In the meeting, Gogoi said, "Rajiv Gandhi was instrumental in ending the Assam agitation by signing the Assam Accord. Even though the Congress was in power in the State at that time, late Gandhi sacrificed his party's interests and upheld the need for fresh elections at that crucial time." Stating that the IT boom started only during the days of Rajiv Gandhi, Gogoi said that the late Prime Minister's efforts to promote peace in the Northeast stopped the growth of many disruptive forces in the country.

AICC working committee member Hemoprava Saikia said that late Rajiv Gandhi was the architect of modern India.

Amongst those present today included former MP Bolin Kuli and MP Gaurav Gogoi.
