GUWAHATI, May 13: Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has appealed to the coalition government at Dispur not to allow the sacrifices made by the 855 martyrs of the State to go in vain by playing the role of a mute spectator in the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The former Chief Minister said this at the 28th foundation day celebrations of the Sadou Asom Jatiya Swahid Pariyal Samanyrakhi Parishad in the city today.
Speaking on the occasion, Mahanta said: “The Assam Accord has to be implemented in letter and spirit. I appeal to the government to address the problems being faced by the family members of the martyrs. Their problems have to be solved.”
The Parishad said that the State Government should reserve posts for the rehabilitation of the family members of those affected in the historic Assam Agitation. “There are members of as many as 886 families affected by the agitation who are yet to be rehabilitated by the Government,” the Parishad said, and added: “The government has to rehabilitate us at any cost. It should make a list of agitation-affected people and State Fince Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma should make all arrangements for the approval of the list. Dispur should also extend aid at the rate of Rs 2 lakh to each of the people who were injured in the Assam Agitation. The rehabilitation of the agitation affected people should been done by December 2000. The State Government is too late to get the job done.” The Parishad said that only four agitation-affected candidates were rehabilitated by the previous government in 2015. “Assam should be made free from foreigners based on the Assam Accord,” the Parishad said.
