GUWAHATI, Oct 17: In a critical cardiothoracic case, a safety-pin was taken out successfully from the alimentary cal of a five-month-old baby girl today. The pricking edge of the safety-pin was not covered under the clasp forming the closed loop.

The baby, Priyankshi, daughter of Debojit Das and Manjula Das of Khatikuchi in lbari, was suffering from fever and disturbance in breathing for the past few days. On October 15, the parents consulted a doctor at lbari who detected the safety-pin lodged in the alimentary cal of the baby in her X-ray photograph. Following advice from the doctor, the parents of the baby rushed her to the Gauhati Medial College and Hospital (GMCH) yesterday.

At 9.30 this morning, Dr. Dipak Choudhury operated upon and took out the safety-pin from the alimentary cal of the baby. Now the baby is under intensive care.
