Scribes' body stages protest over killing of Tripura  jourlist

Guwahati/Dimoria, Nov 22: The tiol Union of Jourlists (India) condemned the killing of another jourlist in Tripura, the second in two months.

Sudip Datta Bhaumik of Syandan Patrika, a leading Bengali newspaper of Agartala, was allegedly shot by one Rifleman nda Reang of the 2nd Tripura State Rifles (TSR) at R K gar, about 20 km from Agartala.

ndagopal Reang, the TSR constable has been arrested by the police.

Reacting to the incident, the president of NUJ (I) Ras Bihari said, “Democracy is being murdered every day in the state and NUJ (I) condemned the killing of the jourlist and termed it as failure of the administration to give protection to the mediapersons.” The NUJ (I) reiterated its demand for a Jourlists Protection Act to ensure safety and impunity for attacks on jourlists.  NUJ (I) secretary (East Zone) Bhupen Goswami said “We demand adequate compensation to the murdered jourlist and appeal to the state authorities to ensure that such incidents should not occur in future.  Meanwhile, the members of Indian Reporters Association in association with Dimoria Students’ Union and Jorabat Jourlists’ Union staged a protest at Jorabat on the city outskirts against the killing of Bhowmik in Tripura.
