Special DGP identifies Guwahati as hotspot

GUWAHATI, August 7: State Special DGP (law and order) Kuladhar Saikia has said that the police in the State are ready to take any threat from any quarter as a challenge. He has identified Guwahati as the hotspot. 
Briefing the press after the review of law and order in the State on Monday, Saikia said: “We’ve inputs of threats from rebel groups, including the ULFA, in Guwahati and other districts in the State. The areas on the outskirts of Guwahati where newer residents have settled and hillside population where people come and go are under vigil with the deployment of adequate forces. Public places like ISBT and other places where people do crowed are also under strict vigil. All inter-state boundaries of Assam have been kept under vigil. The security review meeting involving all top police officials today laid stress on doing everything not to allow any untoward incidents to take place in the State in the run-up to the Independence Day celebrations. Additiol security personnel have been brought to Guwahati and other districts in the State.”
The Special DGP further said: “All citizens’ committees and VDPs have been put on alert.”
On the availability of illegal arms in the State leading to subversive activities, he said: “Some such incidents took place in the State. We’ve been also able to recover illegal arms.”
On the lifting of a few old Maruti cars in the State, Saikia said: “We’ve asked the SPs to do their best to ascertain if militant groups have anything to do with the development.”
Saikia identified Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo etc., as sensitive areas. He identified Guwahati as the hotspot.
On the reports of JMB rebels entering Assam from Bangladesh, ADGP (SB) Pallab Bhattacharya said: “We’ve no specific information. When there are any such developments, we do get information from the Central Intelligence. However, since JMB activities were seen in the State, we’ve alerted all SPs.”
On the JMB mece, Kuladhar Saikia said again: “We’ve sounded an alert in the all districts in the State since there has been a crackdown on rebel groups in Bangladesh.”
