UPA government released no funds for NRC: Sonowal

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 18: In what can best be called as the battle of the Titans, Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal today hit back at his predecessor on the latter’s comment on the ‘delay of NRC update work after the BJP coming to power and the demand for the publication of a white paper on the delay’. The former Chief Minister even told the press yesterday: “If need be, we will move the Supreme Court”.

Targeting Gogoi and the then UPA government at the Centre, Sonowal today said: “The UPA government didn’t even release any funds for NRC update. Funds for the purpose were released only by the NDA government only.” When asked on the issue of according Indian citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis, Sonowal said: “We’ll do everything so as to ensure that the sons of the soil and the indigenous people of the State live with their head held high.” Sonowal is leaving for New Delhi tomorrow to discuss the by-polls in Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat and Baithalangshu LAC slated to be held on November 19 with party high command.”
