Willpower seems to die down!

Kuruwa-rangi bridge over Brahmaputra

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 10: The willpower to build the proposed Kuruwa-rangi Bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati seems to die down every passing day. A startling fact relating to the project is that its DPR is not yet ready.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways agreed in principle to construct the six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Kuruwa and rengi. It is expected to ease traffic congestion on Guwahati bypass with a road link up to Dumunichowki on tiol Highway 52 in Darrang district.

The project was conceived by the previous government in the State led Tarun Gogoi. However, the pace of the project has been slowed down under the BJP-led coalition government in the State. This came to light when BJP’s Sipajhar MLA Binda Kumar Saikia, in an unstarred question, wanted to know the status of the proposed Kuruwa-rangi Bridge and if its feasibility study reports and DPR were complete or not. In his reply to the question, what State PWD Minister Parimal Shuklabaidya said has exposed Dispur’s soft paddling on the project.

Shuklabaidya said: “The feasibility study of the proposed Kuruwa-rangi Bridge is over. The consultant has been asked to submit the fil feasibility study report and other related documents. The DPR of the project is yet to be made. It will be made only after the submission and study of the fil feasibility study report and recommendation from the Union ministry concerned.”

If the project sees light of the day, people in Darrang district will get a direct route to Guwahati. The bridge, if at all constructed, is set to ease traffic jam in Guwahati to a large extent.
