Women not safe under BJP: APCC

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 6: APCC spokesperson Bobbeeta Sharma, vice president Manjushree Pathak and MLA ndita Das have said that the women are not secured under the BJP government in the State.

Addressing the press at Rajiv Bhawan in the city today, Sharma said: “The law-and-order situation is deteriorating fast in the State and crimes against women have been on the rise. Taking the advantage of leniency on the part of the government, crimes against women like witch-hunt, raping and killing, women trafficking, domestic violence etc., are taking place almost every day. Only the crimes against women that took place in May this year are enough to prove that women aren’t safe in Assam. The BJP government in the State couldn’t inherit the tough stand taken up by the Congress government in the State on crimes against women.”

Manjushree Pathak said: “In 2015 when the Congress was in power there were 11,680 incidents of crimes against women. The government detained 17,034 people against the incidents, leading to punishment to 615 of them. In 2016 under the BJP Government, there were as many as 16,194 incidents of crimes against women. Only 12,545 people were detained leading to punishment to only 394 of them. Till April, 2017, there were 4,763 such incidents, leading to the detention of 1,423. However, only 94 of them have been punished.”
