State pays homage to Rupkonwar on Silpi Divas

State today paid tribute to the first Assamese film maker Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala on his death anniversary, observed as the Silpi Divas in Assam

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, was born in Tamulbari Tea Estate in 1903, whose forefathers came to Assam in the early 1800s from Marwar in Rajasthan. He was a playwright, poet, filmmaker, writer.

He made the first Assamese film, Joymoti in 1935, four years after Alam Ara was released.

He passed away in Tezpur on 17th January 1951.
