Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday sent a message to US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump following their coronavirus diagnosis, state-owned media reported.

"My wife, Peng Liyuan, and I express our sympathies to you and your wife and wish you a fast recovery," Xi's message to Trump reportedly said.

Chinese diplomats have also wished a speedy recovery to Trump and his wife, Melania Trump. "My best wishes to President @realDonaldTrump and @FLOTUS for a speedy and full recovery." Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

Chinese Ambassador to US, Cui Tiankai also wished the President and his wife a speedy recovery. ""Saddened to learn President and the FirstLady of the US tested positive. Hope they both have a speedy recovery and will be fine," she wrote.

Trump has also blamed China for the coronavirus outbreak that began in December, going on to term it as the 'Chinese virus' in some of his media interactions.

Xi's sympathy message to the United States President has come at a time when the Chinese-US relations reached an all-time low amid disputes over trade, technology, security, and Beijing's tightening of control over Hong Kong.

It may be recalled that the United States President Donald Trump on Friday said he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the coronavirus.

"Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!," Trump said in a tweet, confirming the development.

The President's physician said on Friday that Trump is doing "well" and will continue to perform his while quarantining with his wife. He said that he expects the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering.

Trump, 74, was admitted in Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. According to reports, he is now having trouble breathing.
