Dalit group in NY protest alleged burning of Indian Constitution by pro-Khalistan group

NEW DELHI: Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha, a well-known Dalit group in the US on Sunday organized a protest against Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, an activist of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) for allegedly burning a copy of Indian Constitution, drafted by BR Ambedkar, one of the most celebrated leaders of the Dalits.

Ashok Mahi, president of the Dalit group, told media that his group had seen a video of the burning of the Indian Constitution which is why they were protesting outside the SFJ office in New York.

Mahi said that they were much upset by Pannu’s act and had reached out to his organization to register “strong feelings” against it. Mahi said the incident had hurt sentiments of many.

“The demand for Khalistan is going on for years but we never conflicted or expressed our views on that, but now we don’t understand what they achieved by hurting our feelings,” Mahi said, according to media reports.

SFJ was formed in 2007 and it's active for the last five years. It has also been shoving for Referendum 2020 for the self-determination of Sikhs as part of its rebel agenda.

It was declared as an “unlawful association” under India’s anti-terror law in July last year after intelligence reports said that it was in “close touch with the militant outfits and activists and also in support of the violent form of extremism and militancy in Punjab and elsewhere to dice out Khalistan out of the territory of India.

The National Investigation Agency, Punjab Police along with Uttrakhand Police have arrested 39 people and registered 12 cases against activists of SFJ in India.
