Following violent protests against the arrest of an Islamist party leader, social media platforms were shut down in Pakistan for a few hours on Friday..

The social media platforms were reportedly snapped from 11 am to 3 pm in the country.

As per reports, the internet in the country has now been restored partially.

Ever since the protests erupted, visuals where scores of protestors were witnessed swarming the streets across all the major cities in the country. The two major cities including Lahore and Rawalpindi are making rounds on the Internet. Read more

The government directed PTA, a telecommunication regulator to ban social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and Telegram from 1100 hrs to 1500 hrs in the country.

After 3 pm, the PTA released a notification on Twitter stating "access to social media applications has been restored."

The move was taken to maintain law and order following violent protests by a banned religious party.

Escalating protests took place in the country after Pakistan interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed made an announcement that the government has decided to ban the Islamist terror outfit Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). Read more

Following the announcement, it was seen that the workers and supporters of TLP have been creating havoc across the country.

It is to be mentioned that the Islamist party Tehreek-i-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) is protesting against the arrest of their leader Saad Hussain Rizvi, who was taken into custody earlier this week.
