MOSCOW: A gunman killed 13 people at a school in central Russia. Victims included as many as 7 children.

Russia's Investigative Committee stated on Monday that 14 children and seven adults were also injured in tragic incident. The incident happened in Izhevsk which is to the west of the Ural Mountains in the Udmurtia region.

Governor Alexander Brechalov said, "There are victims among the children, there are wounded too."

Reportedly the attacked turned the gun on himself afterwards.

Russia's interior ministry took to Telegram and confirmed the shooting.

The culprit was identified by the The Investigative Committee as Artyom Kazantsev (34) . Reportedly he was a graduate of the same school.

The Committee further added that the gunman was dressed in a black t-shirt with "Nazi symbols".

Common people of the opinion that incidents like these are not common in Russia, and most of the times the motives behind it are uncertain.

Russia's National Guard asserted that Kazantsev used two non-lethal handguns, which was capable of firing real bullets. The guns were not registered with the authorities. Authorities have launched a criminal probe into the incident on charges of multiple murder and illegal possession of firearms.

Izhevsk comprises of about 640,000 people. The city is located about 960 kilometres (596 miles) east of Moscow.

Children of age six to seventeen come to learn in this school. Authorities evacuated the school and the area around it was cordoned off.

Russia recently announced a partial mobilisation to boost its forces amidst their ongoing war with Ukraine. Thus it is a critical time amidst which the attack happened. Additionally it was also reported that few hours prior to the school shooting, a man opened fire, consequently wounding a military recruitment officer at an enlistment centre in Siberia.
