Dev Diwali is a Hindu festival also known as Kartik Purnima celebrated each year on the full moon day in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar. This year the Dev Diwali is observed today on Friday 19 November starting with Ekadasi Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksa on the fifth day of Karthik Purnima Tithi.

DATE AND TIMINGS:

• 12:00 PM on 18 November 2021- Starting of Purnima Tithi

• 02:06 PM on 19 November 2021- Ending of Purnima Tithi

SIGNIFICANCE OF DEV DIWALI:

The day of Dev Deepawali holds great value and significance for the people of the Hindu community across the world as Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day. Devotees during Dev Diwali honour Lord Vishnu by visiting temples to offer prayers and to receive blessings from God. The Dev Diwali is also known as Tripurotsav as Lord Shiva killed the demon, Asura Tripurasura.

HISTORY OF DEV DIWALI:

It is believed according to Hindu legends that on Kartik Purnima, Lord Shiva killed an 'Asura' (demons) named Tripurasura blessed with Lord Brahma's powerful penance. The demon was granted immortality for the dedication but later started missing the powers bringing destruction. Lord Vishnu then came out to deal with the demon in his own way and finally killed him. The defeat of the demon Tripurasura by Lord Vishnu, an avatar of Lord Shiva was celebrated by the gods in heaven which were like a Diwali in Kashi.

PRACTICES:

People from all over the country celebrate the day performing different traditions and rituals by following a bath on the Kartik Purnima called 'nadi snaan.' People bathe the idol of Lord Shiva with a special liquid mixed with honey and milk and this process of bathing the idol is known as 'Rudra Abhishekam.' Lighting diyas in houses is also an important part of the rituals of Dev Diwali.
