STRANDED PEOPLE OF MEGHALAYA

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: Legislator Adelbert Nongrum of KHNAM (Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement) has urged Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to ensure that the stranded

people of the State in Tamil Nadu are adequately taken care of. Highlighting the plight of people from the State -- now stranded in and around the CMC Hospital at Vellore -- since the commencement of lockdown, Nongrum said, "They are facing lots of difficulties. Besides, they are running short of money," Nongrum said.

He urged the State government to communicate with the Government of Tamil Nadu and arrange a 'Relief Centre' for these stranded people at the expense of the Meghalaya Government.

"Being far from home, they should not feel that they are homeless especially in this hard and trying time but feel homely in which they may experience the life, love and hope in fighting this virus through patience and without any fear we will together overcome," he said.

He added that "the same yardstick may also be applied to all those people from our State who are facing the same difficulty in different States across the country." At the same time, Nongrum thanked the State government for putting effort to bring back those people who are stranded in other Northeast States.

Nongrum said, "Most importantly, let me also suggest that the government should take an initiative to set up an 'Isolation Center' at the earliest, and not allow people to go for self quarantine as we cannot take things for granted. We may not know the outcome if they are allowed to go for self quarantine." (IANS)
