District Legal Services Authority organizes legal awareness camp

Silchar, May 25: District Legal Services Authority, Cachar, Silchar on the topic ‘Major Beneficial Schemes of the Government’ held a legal awareness camp recently at C.R. High school, Rupaibali, under Lakhipur Sub-division. The main objective behind organizing the camp was to spread awareness about laws and its provisions that can help people in their moments of crisis. M H Barbhuiya, secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Cachar, described the provisions of tiol Legal Services Authority Act, 1987 and also informed every one present the importance of the Act. He also stated the benefits provided under Section 12 of the Act. Section 12 of the Act lays down the criteria for providing legal services to the persons who are eligible. He also said that a large section of people do not have an adequate knowledge about the various Acts and they fail to take help form the law.

 On an advisory note, M H Barbhuiya said that both parents and students must try to become a responsible citizen by opting for careers in the field of engineering, medical sciences and law. He advised the students to become well educated so that they can shine in their life. In the second session of the camp, L Momom Singh, advocate and Notary Public Lakhipur, interacted with the poor and underprivileged persons in the camp. He advised them to come forward to receive the benefits provided in the tiol Legal Services Authority Act, 1987. He also promised to extend help to the needy people residing in the locality in near future.

 This Act has been constituted to provide free legal services to the poor and weaker sections of the society and also to organize Lok Adalats for peaceful settlement of various disputes. In every state and district, there is a State Level Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority respectively. The Act underwent certain amendments under the Amendment Act of 1994 and filly came into force on November 9, 1995. Honourable Justice R N Mishra, the then Chief Justice of India played a vital role in the ectment of this Act. Hemlal Joshi, inspector, Food and Civil Supply, Lakhipur, spoke about providing food security to the people residing in rural areas. He said that the poor people must rice at a very lower rate.

M H Barbhuiya expressed his contentment since despite heavy rains; around 500 persons braved the weather to attend the awareness camp. In a significant decision, he promised to provide fincial assistance to those students who are not able to continue with their studies owing to their fincial crisis. People have expressed their gratitude towards M H Barbhuiya for arranging such an informative awareness camp. It has been informed that another awareness camp would be organized in Binkandie.
