Gorkha cultural meet held

SILCHAR, Feb 9: The second annual Gorkha sports and cultural meet was organized on the playground of Sriko ITI by Silchar west branch of Assam Gorkha Sammelan under the supervision and guidance of Barak Valley regiol unit on Sunday. The annual programme began with the hoisting of flag of the Sammelan by the president of the regiol unit, Ram Bahadur Chetri, in the presence of distinguished invitees and participants. This annual meet is being organized from 2015 with the objective of promoting unity, harmony and togetherness as well as encouraging the talents of the Gorkha community.

 It is also held to motivate the socio-cultural activities among the people of the community across the valley. All the branches in this south Assam take part in the cultural programmes and outdoor games and sports. Among the distinguished guests were present Sushmita Dev, MP, and Babul Hore, general secretary of DSA Silchar. The distinguished members present were Pradip Rai, president, Mohini Kumar Newar, working president, and Sobhraj Gurung, general secretary, of the Barak Valley regiol unit. Members from all the 12 branches of the Sammelan of this valley were present along with the local people who lent their helping hand to the organizer and boosted up the morale of the participants.

 The daylong event drew applause from the impressive gathering. The organizers decided to hold the annual meet on a larger scale to cover various indoor and outdoor games and sports, besides cultural shows in order to make it not only colourful but also memorable. The programme concluded with the prize distribution ceremony and the winning and runner up teams in football received their prizes from Sushmita Dev and Babul Hore. The champion team was from Harigar and the runner up from Dholai east Gangagar.
