Harisinga on boil over teeger assault

KOKRAJHAR/KALAIGAON/TANGLA, June 4: In protest against the brutal assault on a teeger, who is a Class IX student of Harisinga HS School, by miscreants on May 30 at Harisinga in Udalguri, nearly 1,000 people staged a sit-in at Harisinga on Friday demanding the immediate arrest of those involved in brutal assault that led to the loss of vision of the teeger in one eye.

Students and activists of All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), Bodo Women Justice Forum (BWJF), All Bodo Women Welfare Federation (ABWWF), Bodo Harimu Afat and local residents participated in a sit-in at Harisinga on Friday from 10 am to 12 pm. The protesters also blocked the traffic on Harisinga-Udalguri road for over two hours.

A memorandum was submitted to State Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia through the Udalguri Deputy Commissioner’s office, demanding the government’s intervention in the matter.

The protesters demanded a judicial inquiry, medical assistance and compensation for the victim and immediate arrest of those med in the FIR. Police arrested Anjan Das, while the other accused -Ratan Das, Babul Das, Tupa Das, Mukut Das and rayan Nera are evading arrest.

The local people and student organizations have alleged political influence as the police even after three days of the FIR being lodged, have not arrested all the accused.  Mukut Das is the president of Udalguri district of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad. The district administration assured the protesters that stern action would be taken against the culprits. Police have plunged into action, said a district police official.

“The administration has assured that the culprits would be arrested soon. We will wait and watch. If nothing happens, we will continue our protests until the offenders are arrested and justice prevails,” said Rinjoy Boro, president of the Udalguri ABSU.

The protesters are also contemplating approaching the tiol Human Rights Commission.

“We will not sit idle until justice is done and the culprits are arrested and punished,” said Anjali Daimary, president of BWJF.
