No trace of 'murdered' student's body

KOKRAJHAR, April 30: Though the murder of Achinta Basumatary, the fourth semester student of Bodofa UN Brahma College of Kajalgaon in Chirang district, has been confirmed by the police, yet the body has not been recovered. The police in presence of Magistrate on Saturday carried out search operation in five places in East Maligaon. Three persons of village East Maligaon under Bismuri Police outpost in Kokrajhar district were arrested from their village on Friday morning in connection with the murder of a BA 4th semester student of Bodofa UN Brahma College, Kajalgaon, Achinta Basumatary by some villagers on suspicion of witch craft practice by his mother. Basumatary was taken away from his house on April 22 and remains untraced till date. The mother of Achinta, Garjai Basumatary along with her relatives lodged a complaint at Kokrajhar police station on April 28 claiming that her son was missing ever since he was taken away by some villagers on the night of April 22. A case has been registered vide no.246/2016, under section 143/302/201, IPC at Kokrajhar PS. Garjai Basumatary mentioned the me of four villagers suspected to have been involved in the alleged killing of her son. They are Thobra rzary, Gabinda Basumatary, Elesh Basumatary and Sunula Basumatary of the same village. She also said that the villagers had accused her to be a witch since the past five years and even asked them to leave the village.

Based on the complaint lodged in the police station, the police team on Friday morning carried out operation at East Maligaon village but all the accused persons mentioned in the FIR by Garjai were absconding along with other villagers. The police team brought the younger brother of accused Thobra rzary, Ranjan rzary (23), Anil Basumatary (60), father of accused Gabinda Basumatary and Dhiren rzary (40), father of Elesh rzary on Friday morning for interrogation.
