'Best Indie Film' honour for Rima Das' Bulbul Can Sing at Melbourne festival

Assamese filmmaker Rima Das shines once again and this time with her new film Bulbul Can Sing which brought her immense honour and laurels at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne with Best Indie Film. After her first and most widely acclaimed film Village Rockstar, Rima Das returns to fame and her second film has already started the race with wide appreciation.

Notably, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is considered as one of the biggest film festivals held outside India and Rima Das’ film was also nominated in the category of Best Director award. However, in the Best Indie Film category, Bulbul Can Sing was competing with other Indian films like Widow of Silence, The Gold-laden Sheep and the Sacred Mountain, Namdev Bhau, Bhonsle and Chuskit and Bhoga Khirikee. Among other nominated films in this category, Bhoga Khirikee was another Assamese film produced by Priyanka Chopra’s production house.

Expressing her immense joy on receiving the award for her film, Rima Das said, “What a wonderful night this has been! Thank you to the jury of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne for awarding Bulbul Can Sing the Best Indie Film. Special thanks to the audience for all your love.”

She further added how special this particular award has been for her as this is one place where all mainstream, regional and independent films of India comes together under one roof.

However, this is not the first laurel coming to the way of Bulbul Can Sing and the film has been able to mark its presence in other international and national events as well. The film is basically about a teenage school-going girl called Bulbul growing up in a rural village in Assam. The film proceeds with a tragedy happening with her best friend. Further Bulbul’s fights with herself in realizing who she is and what her capabilities are beautifully knitted in the film.
