BHU Student Shot Dead at the University Campus

Guwahati: A suspended student of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) died at the university's hospital early this morning. The student of BHU in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi was shot thrice on Tuesday evening outside the gate of a hostel inside the university campus after which he was admitted at the hospital.

The 23-year old Gaurav Singh had been suspended by the university administration for his alleged role in violence last year that singed the campus in 2017 over the issue of safety of students. The Master degree student was accused of helping to burn down a bus in the violence.

In September 2017, a protest against an alleged incident of harassment turned violent where a number of students, including women and two journalists were injured in a baton charge by the police in the University.

On Tuesday at around 6.30pm four people on two motorcycles came and shot at him while Singh was standing outside the gate of the Birla Hostel and chatting with friends. The bikers shot at him and escaped. Singh took three bullets in his stomach and was rushed to the trauma centre inside the campus and was died at around 1.30 am.

According to police, 10 bullets have been fired at the boy and Uttar Pradesh police have arrested four students of the university and are questioning them after the father of the boy has filed an FIR.

Varanasi Police Chief Anand Kulkarni said that there might be some personal enmity between the boy and the bikers who shot him that has led to the killing. Police is investigating all the angles and a case of murder has been filed.

The police has asked the students of the university to maintain calm and a huge contingent of the police force has been deployed inside the university campus.
