Chennai: At least 30 workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party were injured when helium balloons exploded during the birthday celebrations held on the occasion of PM Narendra Modi's 70th birthday. The incident took place here on Thursday.

According to reports, a spark from fireworks resulted in a blast of gas-filled balloons after which the workers who were standing close to the balloons suffered burn injuries.

The injured were rushed to a nearby medical clinic. It is alleged that no permission was taken to organise the event. Modi's birthday was celebrated by BJP agriculture team at Padi close to Chennai's Ambattur where 2,000 gas balloons were to be released in the sky to mark the celebrations.

The accident took place when the organisers used fireworks to welcome the Deputy Chief of BJP's Kisan Morcha. Police have booked a case since the programme was organised without any permission.
