Income Tax Department started issuing e-PAN to all card holders, Apply paying Rs 107

Guwahati: In order to promote digitization, the Income Tax department has now started issuing electronic PAN (e-PAN) cards to all physical PAN card holders.

As per reports, both the service providers namely NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) or UTIITSL (UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Limited) - allows you to download e-PAN from their official websites.

New PAN card applicants:

If you apply for a new PAN card now, one will get an e-PAN card automatically in their e-mail id mentioned in the application form. The e-PAN service comes completely free of cost when you apply for a physical PAN card by paying Rs 107.

For those whose PAN card was allotted in the last 30 days can also download e-PAN from the website of the service provider absolutely free of cost.

The government has said that it plans to start real-time PAN card processing centres that will have the capacity to issue instant e-PAN in less than 10 minutes of application using Aadhaar-based e-KYC.

Old PAN card holders:

Both UTI and NSDL will charge you a nominal amount each time you want to download e-PAN from their websites. The charges are, however, applicable only if your PAN was not allotted during the last 30 days.

For requests received after one month of fresh issuance of their e-PANs, all users will have to make an online payment of ₹8.26 (inclusive of taxes) against every download of their e-PAN through the service provider's website.

What is e-PAN?

e-PAN is nothing but an electronically issued PAN card in PDF format. The e-PAN card, containing a photograph and signature of PAN card holder apart from Permanent Account Number (PAN), name, father’s name/mother’s name, date of birth, etc, is sent to the PAN applicant on the email id mentioned in the PAN card application form.

The e-PAN also contains an enhanced QR code, like the ones in physical form. The QR code contains demographic as well as biometric (scanned photo and signatures) information of the PAN card holders. Using the PAN QR Code Reader app, the QR code can be used for PAN verification purposes in offline mode also.

Following a notification issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes, e-PAN is now a valid mode of issuance of PAN.
