Guwahati: On Sunday, India overtook Russia recording a total of 6,87,760 coronavirus cases, becoming the third worst hit affected countries -- after USA and Brazil with 29,48,587 and 15,78,376 cases respectively. The death toll in the country on the day rose to 19,568.

Registering a steep spike in numbers on a single day, India recorded 25,000 new cases and 613 new deaths. It is the third consecutive day the country has surged past the 20,000 positive cases mark per day, and cases have continued to rise at record rates post June (coinciding with the Centre's unlock phase). While the number of active cases stood at 2,44,814, the total number of recovered patients numbered 4,09,082.

Out of the 613 deaths reported on Sunday, 295 were from Maharashtra, 81 from Delhi, 65 from Tamil Nadu, 42 from Karnataka, 24 from Uttar Pradesh, 21 from Gujarat, 19 from West Bengal, 12 from Andhra Pradesh, nine from Bihar, eight from Jammu and Kashmir, seven from Rajasthan, five each in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, and Telangana, two each from Goa and Jharkhand and one from Himachal Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the ICMR and other medical institutes in the country working on developing an indigenous vaccine to fight the pandemic and the former said that it aims to complete the indigenous COVID-19 vaccine's clinical trials as soon as possible.
