Indian pilgrims no longer required passport for entering Pakistan

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan took to social media site to announce that his government waived off two key requirements for Indians going for pilgrimage to Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur on Friday.

For Kartarpur pilgrimage Indians will no longer be required to bring their passport and only a valid ID is needed for entering Pakistan, said Imran Khan. He tweeted that Sikhs will no longer need to register ten days in advance.

He further mentioned no fee will be charged on the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor on 9th November and on Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th birth anniversary on 12th November.

For the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak, the first batch of 1,100 Sikhs from India already arrived in Lahore on Thursday.

Amir Hashmi-Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) spokesperson said the first batch crossed over from Wagah Border to attend celebrations of 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak in Nankana Sahib.

Sikhs brought “Golden Palki” along with them. The procession was received here by Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar.

Special arrangements have been made for the pilgrims including medical camp, catering, and transportation. They will visit other gurdwaras as well in Punjab and also take part in the inauguration of the Kartarpur Corridor on 9th November. The Golden Palki will be installed at the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur.

Last week India and Pakistan signed an agreement on the Kartarpur Corridor that will allow Indian pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib without a visa. This agreement will allow 5,000 Indian pilgrims daily to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib where Guru Nanak spent the last 18 years of his life. After three rounds of tough negotiations despite bilateral relationship, India and Pakistan signed the agreement.

Meanwhile, India has requested Pakistan not to charge the Indian pilgrims and each visitor would be required to pay USD 20 as a fee. Indian pilgrims can use the corridor and the travel will be visa-free.
