India's COVID-19 death toll soars past 1 lakh, mortality rate at 1.56%

New Delhi: India's COVID-19 death toll surged past the 1 lakh mark on Saturday with 1,069 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement early in the morning today. On a positive note, the number of people who have recovered from the disease crossed 54 lakh, pushing the recovery rate to 83.84 percent.

The number of virus cases in the country has mounted to 64,73,544 with 79,476 new infections being reported in a day.

On the other hand, the addition of 1,069 more deaths in a span of 24 hours has taken the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the country to 1,00,842. The COVID-19 case fatality rate was recorded at 1.56 percent.

Presently, there are 9,44,996 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country, which comprises 14.60 percent of the total caseload, the government data, released at 8 am, showed. The total recoveries have surged to 54,27,706.

It needs mention here that India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, and 40 lakh on September 5. The cumulative tally soared past 50 lakh on September 16 and crossed 60 lakh on September 28.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 7,78,50,403 samples have been tested up to October 2, of which 11,32,675 were tested on Friday.
