With his chants 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', Lal Bahadur Shastri, a simple man with high principles and great leadership qualities fought against all adversities because of his strong willpower and hard work. He always followed the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak and considered them as his inspiration to fight against the British Raj.

Born in the year 1904 at a small town in Uttar Pradesh called Mughalsarai, Shastri shares his birthday with Mahatma Gandhi, and his life and work are often forgotten in the midst of celebrating 'Gandhi Jayanti'.

He was the 2nd Prime Minister of India for merely a year and a half, he did remarkable things worth following. Today, after 74 years of Independence, the leadership qualities and legacy of Lal Bahadur Shastri continues to be relevant even in 2020.

1. Shastri teaches the value of honesty and never took undue advantage of his position. He spent 9 years in jail, and during this tenure, he kept his words and came back to the prison after the cremation of his daughter, who died because of illness.

2. He was a man with integrity and showed during the time when he resigned as the position of Railway minister by taking the moral responsibility of a rail accident. He was also the first person to appoint a committee on the prevention of corruption during his tenure as Home Minister.

3. Shastri proved that with strong determination and hard work no one can stop you from achieving your goals. He was only one his father died which made his life difficult from an early age but he overcame everything with his willpower. As he belonged from a very humble family, he had limited resources. On several occasions, he also swam across the river Ganges to reach his school.

4. He taught us to accept new ideas and open-minded to achieve progress and success. He was against social issues like untouchability, dowry. During his tenure as a transport minister, Shastri was the first person to appoint women conductors in public transport in India.

5. Shastri was a soft-hearted person and cared about everyone. As a minister of police, he introduced water-jets to disperse the crowd instead of lathi-charge. Never miss a chance to help someone in need.

6. Lal Bahadur Shatri was an inspiring and selfless leader. During the food crisis in the country, he urged the people of the nation to skip weekly one meal to save the food and people followed him.

Behind the calm nature and politeness of Shastri, he showed his strength and determination by leading India to achieve victory in the 1965 war against Pakistan. There is no doubt why Lal Bahadur Shastri has been inspiring and motivating millions of hearts for decades and will continue to motivate people with his legacy for the years to come.
